Cranking the Hog: Inside Tallon Electric and Bilmuri’s Signature Tone Machine
When it comes to modern guitar tones that straddle the line between chaotic heavy math-rock, massive pop-punk hooks, and electro-laced emo, few artists do it quite like Johnny Franck of Bilmuri. Known for massive riffs, infectious grooves, and an unforgettable internet presence, Bilmuri’s sonic signature requires a specific kind of violence: tones that are simultaneously devastatingly heavy and crystal clear.
To bring that exact sound out of the studio and onto pedalboards worldwide, Tallon Electric partnered with Franck to create a flagship distortion and overdrive powerhouse appropriately named The Hog.
The Quest for Pure Tone: The Bilmuri Collaboration
The creation of The Hog wasn’t just a simple branding exercise. Johnny Franck and the builders at Tallon Electric spent months in the lab utilizing Franck’s personal studio gear to break down, analyze, and rebuild his signature tone from albums like Eggy Pocket and 400LB Back Squat.
The primary design goal was simple: package Bilmuri’s massive, aggressive, yet remarkably articulate guitar sound into a sturdy stompbox that could be safely stomped on night after night on tour. The result is an “amp-in-a-box” style pedal that bridges the gap between boutique overdrive clarity and high-gain distortion madness.
Anatomy of the Pedal: Controls and Features
The Hog relies on a deceptively straightforward control layout that lets players dial in everything from subtle, touch-sensitive breakup to crushing, wall-of-sound distortion:
- Load: Controls the overall output volume of the pedal.
- Crank: Adjusts the gain structure of the internal distortion channel.
- Optimize: One of the pedal’s standout features, this knob acts as a blend control between the distortion channel and a punchy crunch overdrive circuit, allowing you to fine-tune the exact texture of your dirt.
- Clarity: Acts as a specialized tone control to manage high-end sparkle and treble content.
- Beef Switch: A toggle switch that lets you contour the low end, shifting between a tight, punchy low-frequency response or a massive, thick bass boost.
With soft-touch true bypass switching and top-mounted jacks, it’s built explicitly for modern pedalboard integration.
Why The Hog Rips
Whether you are playing rapid-fire pop-punk rhythms or dropping your 7-string down to drop-A for heavy, chunky grooves, The Hog refuses to get muddy. By blending multiple gain stages rather than relying on a single clipped signal, it maintains note separation even under heavy saturation.
It captures the exact ethos of Bilmuri’s music: unapologetically fun, intensely heavy, and relentlessly catchy.
